By plane or by train: how to decide on your mode of transport
There are a lot of factors that need to go into deciding how you are going to travel when you go on vacation. The biggest of these will be the distance that you have to travel, if you are going to the other side of the world you are almost certainly going to fly. For shorter trips you will have more options so you will need to look at what is available, the cost and how long it will take you to get to your destination using that mode of transportation.
The first option that you have for transportation is to drive in your own car. This offers quite a few advantages, the biggest being cost. Driving is usually, but not always the least expensive option. The other big advantage is that it means you will have a way to get around once you get to your destination. On the downside driving also means that you have to have somewhere to park when you get where you are going which in some places can be a problem. Driving also tends to limit you to shorter trips.
The next option that you have for getting to your destination is to fly. For longer trips this is almost always the best option. Even for some shorter trips you may find that flying is a good idea. It is usually, although again not always the fastest way to get where you are going. The price of plan tickets has also come down dramatically so it can be very inexpensive as well. The downside to flying is that it is not the most comfortable way to travel and it limits the amount of stuff that you can bring with you.
The train may be a good option in some locations. Some areas have excellent train service which can be a very fast, affordable and comfortable way to get around. For moderate distances it may actually be faster than flying when you factor in the time that you would spend at the airport. The downside to trains is that there are a lot of areas that either have no train service or more likely have a poor quality service. You are going to want to limit your use of the train to areas that are well served.
There are lots of other ways that you can get around such as a bus, boat or bicycle. Obviously you will need to decide if any of these are appropriate for you. In large part it will depend on where you are going. In many cases you will find that a bus is the only way to get where you are going. Make sure that you research all of your options so that you can choose the best one for your needs.
